Our First Tryst with Reel

Our journey begins with a sweet lemony aroma of the grass, sound of chopping grass and frothy bubbles, laughter and excitement in the air; and the tense wait of the ‘final drop’!

A documentary film has been made on the distillation of lemon grass to extract oil. This has brought many teachers (Mrs. Beena Varkey, Mrs. Manju Chawla and Mrs. Uttara Mazumdar) and students in close friendly interaction where we all learnt, researched and had fun together. Our eyes got open to the natural way of preventing the disastrous epidemics caused by mosquitoes.

“Lights, Camera, Action” were the words that set us all in motion. Being in front of a live camera and filmed for a documentary was an out of the way thrilling experience. Bringing the nicely chopped lemon grass (Cymbopogon Citratus), setting up of the apparatus, the long await of the distillation process to be complete and running after live mosquitoes was all worth in the end when we saw a tiny drop trickling down the condensing tube and down in our collecting conical flask. There we had the filtrate which proved our objective of experiment – an eco – friendly mosquito repellent.

I feel extremely proud and gratified to say that the immense hard work and team spirit put in by all the involved teachers and students was the cause of the success of this experiment.

I am overwhelmed with happiness that our school has reached these heights and moreover the elation is for contributing to a field which needs much attention in today’s environmental crisis.
